Freeform Casting Workshop

At the guild studio on 20 June 2026, Peter Grooby introduced five members to the exciting technique of freeform casting with silver. A rosebud tip was added to the oxygen and LPG torch, the new crucible was cured, and several different mediums were set up—ordinary water, salted water, pine needles, kernels of corn, sunflower seeds, pecan nuts, dried spaghetti, and half a red cabbage!

While some castings were amazing, those not considered spectacular enough were remelted and poured into a different medium. Everybody agreed that it was great fun and several people wished they had more silver scrap. We look forward to seeing some freeform cast pendants, brooches, rings and even earrings in the near future.
